The Curious Case of Dr. Humpp
"The Most Curious of
Them All..."
Delightful Argentinean
sexploitation film is one of the
best of its kind.
This is quite a bizarre Argentinean horror/sexploitation piece from director Emilio Vieyra.  I'm a huge fan of Image's
Something Weird Video line, and this is my favorite out of them all.  Originally titled La Venganza del sexo, Vieyra's
opus was given the Humpp moniker when Jerald Intator (
Striporama, Eve or the Apple, and Satan in High Heels)
purchased it for US distribution.  The "curious" aspect of the US title does not refer to the inquisitive looking fellow
that graces the DVD cover, but is instead a knockoff of an X-rated Swedish film of the same year -
Jar ar nyfiken
gul
(I Am Curious Yellow).  In the late 60s the word curious was synonymous with sex, Dr. Humpp even claimed to
be the most curious of them all!
Moving on to the film itself, there's probably very little middle ground here.  If you have a taste for low budget sleaze
and exploitation it's a safe bet that you'll enjoy this one.  If that's not really you cup of tea...you should probably skip
over this one.  For what it's worth though, there aren't many that do it better.  The acting is over the top enough to
keep in entertaining for the duration.  What really puts this movie above the usual film of this nature is the incredible
monster that's on the cover.  That's what reeled me in, with a title like that and a mug like that gracing the cover there
was no way I could pass this one up.  His head somewhat resembles a shriveled up raisin but I think Frank
Henenlotter put it best in the gatefold inlay for the DVD when he described him as "looking like he's contracted over
4,000 sexual diseases."  The plot is rather simple, Humpp (the doctor in the film, not the charming monster) wants to
rule the world by turning people into sexually charged zombie like creatures.  A good deal of sex and chaos ensue,
including a great scene with a monster in a tree strumming a lute amongst a gaggle of nude women.
Thanks to Something Weird's superb dvd this film has a new lease on life.  I know I would probably have never found
it otherwise and surprisingly enough a sample from the film turns up on the song
Never Gonna Stop on Rob Zombie's
CD
The Sinister Urge (2001).  Compared with some of the other SWV releases, the extras are a bit scanty but there
is still fun to be had.  It comes with a trailer for Humpp and Vieyra's
The Deadly Organ (also 1967), a few TV spots,
three archival short films, and the usual gallery of exploitation art accompanied by Horrorama radio spots.  The most
interesting extra is the short
The Girl and the Skeleton which contains some of the smuttiest behavior involving a
Halloween decoration I've seen in some time.
The curious doctor deserves a full 5 raisin headed automatons out of 5.
